In 1876, the village was granted a district centre status, then on 1st February, 1988, the so-called large village title. On 1st July, 2005, Kemecse was given the status of town. Kemecse is situated in the Northern Great Plain (Alfóld) region, in Szabolcs-Szatmár- Bereg County, 15 km north of Nyíregyháza, on the border of the Nyírség and Rétköz regions. The town lies by the Záhony-Budapest railway line no. 100 and, as such, has considerable passenger and cargo traffic passing through it. It also has an industrial loading area and industrial railway. A plan for the improvement of the railway is now being developed, as a result of which trains will be able to reach a speed of 160 kmlh when passing through the town. The development project is going to be implemented with the grant of the European Union within 10 years. The building of motorway M3 is going to reach the region by the spring of2007, putting the town only 16 km from the motorway. The town is the region's heath-care and logistic centre. Kemecse is the oldest member of the Ibrány-Nagyhalász statisticai small region, which consists of 17 towns and villages. It is one of the most dynamically developing towns of the small region and the third most populated. The Central-Szabolcs Small Regional Multiple Purpose Association plans to establish the small region's logistic centre in the town since three countries, Ukraine, Slovakia and Romania, can be reached within an 80-km radius of the town. In addition, the town belongs to the proposed logistic region between Nyíregyháza and Debrecen. The advantageous geographicallocation, natural endowments and economic potential of the town, as weIl as the developed infrastructure offer advantages to the local population. The town has an outstanding amount ofthermal water, which awaits utilization. In 2005, the local representatives decided to prepare a new urban organization plan to make the town the economic, commercial and service centre of the region. The development plans were designed to provide sufficient space for the expansion of both residential and industrial areas. The medium-term plans inc1ude the creation of an Agrarian Industrial Logistic Park. In order to realize the development goals, the population of Kemecse will need to be increased to 10 thousand by 2030. The ongoing urbanization of the town provides an appropriate basis for this target. New residential areas may be established on the outskirts of the town in an area whose size equals the existing residential area. During the establishment and classification of residential areas, the main priority is the creation of liveable, suburban neighbourhoods in the southern part of the town. According to the plan, the residential buildings in these new neighbourhoods cannot be higher than six metres. The size of the affected area is 180hectares. The industrial and economic development is the precondition for the continuing dynamic development of the town. In order to achieve the desired industrial and economic growth, service-economic and industrial-economic areas have been appointed. An important, so-caIled brown-fieid, industrial area is a 20.2-hectare plot in the eastern part of Kemecse, where a packaging manufacturing enterprise is already in operation. The other industrial-economic area, where we plan to open the industrialagrarian logistic park, is situated in the western part of Kemecse and measures 90 hectares. When allocating the area to be built up on the outskirts of the town, our main criteria were favourable terrain conditions and the viability of projects with the involvement of relatively little earthwork. The roads planned to be built within or leading to the Agrarian Industrial Logistic Park will be directly connected to the municipality-owned roads in the inner area of Kemecse. The Agrarian Industrial Logistic Park will be supplied with fuIl-scale public utilities, including drinking water, sewer, natural gas, electricity, cable television, and broadband Internet access. The loading and unloading of freight carriages in the loading area of the railway station take place through the year, and the annual quantity of goods transported to or from the town amounts to 20-25 thousand tonnes. The area of the Agrarian Industrial Logistic Park is easily accessible from the railway station, and the plans include the building of a new access road to the Park. The favourable geographical location, advanced transport infrastructure and availability of ample space make the Agrarian Industrial Logistic Park suitable for the establishment of commercial and distributive centres, warehouses, and manufacturing (machine industry and agricultural process ing) and service companies, as weIl as enterprises that supply businesses in nearby towns. Our town is named a small regional central town by the Northern Great Plain Regional Operative Programme for the years 2007-2013. Lipők Sándor Major of Kemecse
